Mekka'
A tropical paradise

The All Important Whale

The Mekka'ns, as we are called, live on a small, tropical island. We are egalitarian people, believing that everyone is equal and each person's role is as important as any others. Although we are a strong horticultural socitey, we rely heavily on sacred whales as a means for substistance as well as religion. We are not ruled by a single person. We believe in the tribal council of elders to make and carry out decisions for the well-being of our great land. Explore the cuture of Mekka and you will be amazed. All hail the whale god Mystices!

  • Environment: The people of Mekka' reside on a small tropical island with tectonic activity.
  • Subsistence and Exchange: Our exchange is primarily based on reciprocity, both general and balanced. We live off of the land through the use of horticulture and fishing. We have great respect for our environment and carefully maintain a balance with it. Our most prized and treasured source of subsistence is that of the whale which migrate past our island annually.
  • Language and Gender: Our society is extremely egalitarian, and this is shown through all aspects of the culture. While roles vary by gender, all roles are equally important. Egalitarianism is shown by our language's absence of the concept of dominance. It is even shown in how we carry ourselves. The women stand straight while the men slouch down to even out the height differences.
  • Sex, Love, and Marriage: Marriage for us is about forming relationships and providing security. Love plays no role. We practice polyandry and exogamy. The males spend equal time living alone with their wife, and they have equal sexual rights to her. Sex outside of the marriage is acceptable.
  • Family and Household: A family is a woman, her husbands, and their children. There is no distinction based on which child is which husband's. Single women live together in a single hut as a family. Land is passed down from mother to daughter, and the men move to a small hut with their wives in their wife's tribe close to her parents.
  • Kinship and Social Organization: Kinship is ambilineal, and we chose which parent's family to call our own. We use the Hawiian naming system so we value all family as equally close.
  • Policitcal Organization: Our political structure is made up of tribal council of elders. A certain amount of experience in whaling is required to sit on the council. There are no other branches of government.
  • Religion: We practice a form of animism focused on the whale. We have great respect for them, and they in turn sacrifice themselves once a year that we might eat, celebrate, and be merry. With the celebration of the whale, a new year begins that allows social renewal and reconcile as well as great feasting.
  • Art and Cultural Values: Our society is based on reciprocity and gift giving. Various "heirlooms" are a staple in our values as they represent your family.
  • Technology- The technology of Mekka is based on what the earth provides. All of our tools are made from wood and other earthly products.
  • Education - Our education is based mostly by inheriting and learning your given role in society from the elders. There is no estabilshed schooling system.
  • Entertainment - Entertainment is based off of the religious time of when the whales pass through the area. There is a grand festival lasting many days including various activities and competitions.

I think it would make most sex to divide into genders. The girls could be educated as to how to manage the gardens that the mother of the family manages and the boys could learn how to fish and hunt. I think it would be cool if everyone learns how to build the community, however, like construction and preserving the village.

I think that is a good idea to have the couple in one "shack" and the family in another. This would help the bonds between the man and wife while the man is at home for the time being. Maybe the couple could live in a hut which could be smaller and the shack for the family which would be bigger? just a thought.
