The Mute Koobecaf

It seems strange that any group of peoples could have an extensive knowledge of words, phrases, and gestures but never say a single spoken word to each other. All research has lead us to believe, up until this point, that all living creatures learn to speak before using symbols, pictures, and writing to express themselves. After experiencing the Koobecaf first hand for the past 3 years, it is obvious to see that the previous statement is one of the most ethnocentric we have devised. Even with this near backward execution of communicating, the Koobecaf’s numbers grow exponentially each year. The Nacirema are especially attracted to the Koobecaf way of life. More and more people are sucked into this strange culture every day; awed by the power it gives people to see everything yet remain anonymous. It gives everyone an outlet for the individualism they crave while growing bonds at the same time. Most of all, it gives them the power to talk without actually speaking, or the power to not even speak at all.

Nacirema people are naturally curious, especially about the people around them. Where they come from, what they enjoy and do not enjoy, what are their hobbies. This is one of the reasons why Koobecaf is such a popular culture change for the Nacirema. Koobecaf gives the people special powers to know many details about another person’s life without ever asking them face-to-face questions. All a “Koobecaf Reklats” has to do is know another persons name and magically they are able to see much about someone else, usually without that particular person being aware. The main reason any Nacirema would become a “Koobecaf Reklats” is to either a) research a potential mate’s availability and to see their likes/dislikes or b) research a potential employee to assess moral values. Though this might seem dirty and underhanded by our standards, the Koobecaf culture is one of no secrets and more so of open expression.

Individualism is one of the most important entities to the Nacirema. They jump at any chance to express themselves through any medium necessary. Koobecaf creates a very simplistic yet variety-filled way of life for the Nacirema to show their true colors with passion. Someone now has the chance to let the world know exactly how they feel about a certain issue, or what that person’s favorite hobby is. When someone gets involved with Koobecaf, they suddenly have the advantage of stopping moments of time. With these little snippets they are able to let others in on their lives at a visual level while not actually “being there”. They also gain the power to send and receive personal gifts (though as intangible as they might be), making bonds between people stronger and stronger. These gifts include “repmub srekcits”, pictures with words attached with a hidden meaning only those who give and receive can deduce. Another popular one is to give drinks, hugs, and kisses. A strange concept since the giver only gives the words, not the action. Likewise, the receiver never actually experiences these gifts, but only the words and what they represent. These are some of the stranger ways of showing each person’s individuality to one another while growing bonds at the same time.

Over all else, Koobecaf gives the Nacirema the power to either talk without speaking or not to talk at all. There are always those times when the Nacirema feel as though they should say or do something but are too scared to be scrutinized directly. Sometimes they want to just observe instead of getting flung into an argument. When someone joins Koobecaf, they automatically gain these attributes they so desire. They are now free to say what they want to whomever they want however they want. They are protected with the anonymous “ytsenoh xob”. This lets the Nacirema tell the truth without fear of it lashing back. They are able to join groups of other Naciremas to talk about issues amongst others from thousands of miles away. If someone is offended it matters not because there is an extremely low chance of ever actually seeing that person face to face. Koobecaf allows Nacirema to watch others talk, it gives them ideas and new concepts of how things work. It gives them insight to others ways of thinking. Nothing ever forces someone involved with Koobecaf to talk, giving the individual freedom to say anything they want, or nothing at all.

It amazes me how such a culture can work without spoken words, work so well that their numbers grow exponentially year after year. Even without really saying anything to someone else, one can know almost every detail about a person by utilizing Koobecaf. It seems like a most backward way of thought and evolution, but perhaps backward is the new forward for Nacirema.
