The Ecneulfni of Koobecaf
By: Hannah Ross

Why do the Nacirema never seem completely content with their lives? Why do they always strive for bigger and better and feel the need to prove themselves to be unique individuals, while at the same time, also as socially complacent parts of a community? For such a self-aware and perceptive culture, the Nacirema appear to have lost sight of the physical human interactions that make up a society and have transferred their emotions and identities into “rebyc” reality.
The culture of the Nacirema is very strange because they seem to value individuality but also strive to find some kind of connection and shared sense of identity with others in their society. They are constantly intriguing me by their very means of living. They have this system that they use to keep in touch with each other called koobecaf. The Nacirema use this koobecaf for many different purposes, but mostly, I have observed, they used it as a way to reach out to the world and be able to stay connected to all of those in the tenretni community. This tenretni is a huge mystery to me, as it seems to have so many functions and necessary uses for the Nacirema, but also, it seems like the main thing disconnecting the Nacirema from each other. This is very interesting to me because I feel that by using the koobecaf as such a crutch for communication, the Nacirema, instead of establishing their individualistic identities and staying connected to each other, are actually losing their own individual identities and sense of selves.
How is this concept of koobecaf so popular in the Nacirema society and culture? This cultural phenomenon is such a difficult thing to observe and comprehend because there are so many uses for it. The Nacirema use it as means of staying connected to family members who live in different parts of Acirema because it seems as if they don’t have enough time during their days to use their “enohpelet” device. Also, it seems like they rely on their tenretni to stay linked to their community, rather than relying on physical human interaction. They all have very individualistic perceptions of self, while still maintaining a shared sense of identity as one collective body of ideas, and I feel that this is unique to their culture. They use these ideas of “sgolb” and “sgolv” to expand their community and to communicate with more humans than just the ones that they already know. The Nacirema seem to be very interested in branching out and interacting with many different types of societies. They have a bunch of other different means of communication through koobecaf, such as seliforp and serutcip. Seliforp is a concept of displaying their interests and their individual perceptions for others out there to connect to and relate with, and serutcip is a tool that they use to record memories and events throughout their lives. These are critical concepts to the Nacirema because they help to still keep the Nacirema in-tune with the lives of their friends and family without having to contact them through their “enohpelet.” All of these concepts and ideas are tools of koobecaf that help to define the Nacirema as a culture because of how they can seemingly remain linked to and continue to reconnect with their, what they call, “skrowten” with the ease of the tenretni.
All in all, from most of my observations and fieldwork, I have discovered the Nacirema mainly use koobecaf as an emotional outlet, a way to rid themselves of boredom, and, overall, as a tool to compliment their curiosity about other humans in general. They always want to know details about the lives of others in their community and are very curious about the endless realm of possibilities that koobecaf has to offer. I have also observed that besides being a means of reaching out and communicating with others, they also use their koobecaf as a stress-reliever, a personal diary, and as a system of emotional release. It is where they put down their most secret desires, their loves, their hates, and their biggest ambitions. It is an outlet for them to go to release from their hectic days and let out the frustration of living in such a technologically advanced society like Acirema. It is their hopes and dreams all summed up in a “skrownet,” a way to be who you truly are as an individual, while still reaching out to others around you. Koobecaf enables the Nacirema to express their individualistic ideas, beliefs, and values, while, at the same, enabling them to remain altogether connected to their community and their community’s collective cultural identity.
