Tanner Randall's Koobecaf Essay
Tanner Randall 9-20-08 Koobecaf and the Change On Communication
While doing participant observation on the Nacirema culture I stumbled across a new means of technology I heard natives call Koobecaf. They spoke of the ways this Koobecaf had changed the way their culture went about things in their every day lives. I was perplexed by how one thing could cause all of these changes the Nacirema people spoke of. Could one thing really change a culture that much? To figure out what was really going on here I began to take a closer look into the Nacirema’s Koobecaf. The thing that caught my eye when I looked at this Koobecaf was how it was changing how the Nacirema people interacted socially. When looking at the Nacirema’s social structure you can see that they pride themselves in several different aspects. One of these ways is how the Nacirema people communicate. Nacirema communication has been changing since the time their culture was developed. The Nacirema people encourage social interactions between friends, family, and co workers. When doing my research on Koobecaf I saw that Koobecaf was changing how this communication took place. Before the Nacirema discovered Koobecaf communication was much more personal. Granted the Nacirema had technology such as email and cell phones before Koobecaf, but even these types of communication are far more personal means of communication than this new Koobecaf. Koobecaf allows people to leave what the Nacirema call “comments” on peoples “walls” to have a type of communication between person to person. There is no personal contact between either of the participants. If a person was trying to throw a party for someone’s birthday in the Nacirema culture before Koobecaf was created they would either invite people to the party in person, send them an invite in the mail, or call them on the phone to invite them. Then the person who was invited would have to RSVP by phone or other means. This kept the communication between the Nacirema people personal. Koobecaf on the other hand takes away all personal contact by allowing someone to create an “event” and then they can invite people on their “friends list”. Then these people can just click a button and they can either RSVP as they are coming or not. This eliminates all personal communication. When looking deeper into the way Koobecaf changed Nacirema’s social structure I realized that it was allowing the Nacirema people to communicate with people they have never seen or talked to before. Koobecaf allows the Nacirema people to become “friends” with anyone around the world who also have Koobecaf. This gives the Nacirema people a chance to communicate with people they may have never had the chance to communicate with before Koobecaf was created. Another way Koobecaf has changed Nacirema culture is how a person in the Nacirema culture can learn things about new people. Instead of having to communicate with someone and ask them questions about what they like to do, what their favorite type of music is, or even their relationship status, the Nacirema people can learn all of these things by just looking at someone’s “profile” on Koobecaf. This makes the Nacirema’s communication become even more impersonal. After reviewing my research I feel like this thing the Nacirema call Koobecaf is destroying the level of personal communication the Nacirema once had. I feel that if more technological advances like this Koobecaf take place the Nacirema communication will be changed forever. Koobecaf has made it so the Nacirema people can have limited personal communication but still communicate with a vast amount of people. Although this is detrimental to the Nacirema culture, it has allowed many Nacirema people to communicate with more people in Nacirema than they would have been able to without Koobecaf, which may be helpful for the Nacirema culture.
