Subsistence and Exchange:

The tropical rainforest of Nalani is located in the central region of the world near the equator. Nalani is an island that is very scarce of food and resources. The island is covered in trees and in some parts of the island there is little sunlight, so it can be difficult to grow food on this island. Many may think that the island of Nalani would be extremley hard to live on, but the people that live here are culturaly adaptive to their environment (Haviland, 152). Nalani is a horticulture environment, therefore the people on this island will be on their own to find and gather food for themselves and family (Haviland, 165). Fishing is another way that the people in Nalani get their food. Since there are many streams and rivers in and around this island fishing is a very practical form of getting food. There is an extreme amount of rain that falls yearly in Nalani, so the food that is grown has to sustain great amounts of water. In order to get the food and nutrients that the people that live in Nalani need, the people will have to travel and hunt and gather products. The people here can also obtain food from farm plots that have been cleared from the forest, and hunt within the forest to find fruit, and nuts that have fallen from the high trees. The main diet in Nalaniincludes; fish, yams, beans, nuts, cassava, toro, breadfruit, coffee, chocolate, bananas, mangoes, papayas, avocados, and sugar cane. The culture of Nalani will be using the slash-and-burn method. In order to gatherfood items and bring them back to the community people here will have to build tools. The people on this island will use tree bark, bamboo, and leaves to build nets, and wooden traps. There is not be just one person in the culture who is responsible for making the nets and traps and gathering food. Everyone is on their own and is responsible for making their own nets and traps and gathering their own food.
Reciprocity is the type way of exchanging in Nalani.Since the island of Nalani is very scarce the people here will need to exchange material and food from other cultures close to the island, and within Nalani (Haviland, 186). Since coffee, chocolate, bananas, mangoes, papayas, avocados, and sugar cane are very hard to gown in other areas of the world, and are very populated in Nalani, the people that live here will be able to exchange these items with another culture. Hunters and gathers can trade high value forest products such as hides, feathers, and honey with agricultural people living outside the tropical forest. Nalani will even be able to exhange from within the island because different parts of the island have and don't have certain foods and materials that other parts of the island have.
The culture of Nalani is very different from other cultures around the world because the tropical forest is layered with trees. There are also some parts of Nalani where it never stops raining. Since this island has high trees that get a lot of sunlight and a lot of rain Nalani is able to produce a lot of fruits that many other cultures can not. Therefore, many other cultures may rely on the island of Nalani to get their exotic fruits.
