Preston Stephens' Koobecaf EssayThis is a featured page

A new idea is sweeping across the vast reaches of the Nacirema people, an idea that is modifying the delicate makeup of Naricema culture. The idea is Koobecaf. For the Nacirema, a very interesting and somewhat peculiar group of Homo sapiens, Koobecaf seems to be exactly what they need to satisfy their ever-quickening technological needs. For years, it has been viewed that the Nacirema have become dependent upon ideas and technologies that allow certain tasks to be completed with high efficiency and speed. It has been hypothesized for some time now that a technology would appear that would change the entire structure of the Nacirema society. This technology has finally come in the form of Koobecaf. Koobecaf, as described to me by natives, is “a social utility that connects you to the people around you”. This technology has changed, though they may not realize, their entire way of functioning as a group of people. Although it has mainly attracted constituents somewhere between the ages of 16 to 22, it is slowly being transferred to the society’s elders. Koobecaf is allowing them to become less extroverted and less dependent on real life relationships. For the normal Nacirema person, from birth they crave the companionship and intimacy of human contact. However, with the use of Koobecaf, this common, yet powerful intuition is being changed completely. With Koobecaf, people try less to form relationships with people in real world situations, and insist upon getting to know people behind the veil of the cyber world of the Tenretni (the device that allows for Koobecaf to run). With Koobecaf, Naciremians only have to “add” someone as their friend and the conversations begin (or at least can begin). In this, many individuals get to live their lives through Koobecaf. For instance, those individuals who are socially awkward or not necessarily prone to meeting new people, or desirable mates, in person can simply click a button and start a relationship with someone they would never be able to meet outside in the village. Although this is good for the people who are socially introverted, it is alarming at how out of hand it is getting, and how little the natives realize this. The invention of Koobecaf is (or will soon) changing the natural constitutions and structures of Nacirema culture. Speaking directly of their infrastructure, the Nacirema are obsessed with technology and focused on a market economy. The idea of technology is very important to the Nacirema because they are constantly trying to upgrade and make things work better and faster. The invention of Koobecaf has embraced this idea, allowing individuals to converse, with the convenience of plunking a few buttons. The market economy, which is precious to the Nacirema, is used on Koobecaf by allowing for numerous organizations to publish information persuading the Nacirema to buy their goods. Also, with the recent addition of the “Tekram Ecalp”, individuals can buy and sell items to each other through Koobecaf. With this invention, it can be perceived that there will soon be no more market places in which the Nacirema will go. Now speaking of the social structure, Naciremaians desire the ideas of relationships and forming bonds by organizations. With Koobecaf, one can simply look up and see exactly how many friends another person has to see how “popular” he/she is without actually talking to the person. Also, with the addition of “Spuorg”, people can link themselves together into various cliques based on simple ideas, without actually meeting each member face to face. Shifting now to the Nacirema superstructure, individuals live the way they do based on their ideas, concepts, and values. For the Nacirema, having a set system of ideas, concepts, and values can define who a person really is. Koobecaf has harnessed these thoughts and made them a main component to each person’s “Eliforp”. On their “Eliforps”, Naciremians can post various things ranging from what they believe in to what kind of music they like. With this, Naciremians are putting less importance on finding out who a person really is, and just using their “Eliforps” to tell them. As I’ve said before, Koobecaf is (indirectly) causing the population to become less publicly social. If Naciremians do nothing about this very dire situation, it is very possible that they will forget everything they learned as a culture, and morph into something that is altogether anti-social, private, and…cyber.
