Mike Ellis's Koobecaf Assignment
The Koobecaf Assignment By: Michael Ellis Anthropology 204 The age of technology is upon us and people are demanding communication on a whole new level. Facebook has answered this demand in the fullest, providing a free of charge service to people all around the world. Facebook has changed for the better since its release. The original Facebook only allowed people who had a college email to participate in the madness. Now, high school kids to employers are able to have their own account. Among students, Facebook is known as one of the greatest time wasters in life next to television. There’s something captivating about logging in and having access to information about friends you have from all over the world. Facebook is a way to network with many people at the same time. It is a way to show the world what you stand for. The reasons for Facebook’s popularity are easily illustrated through the barrel model of Anthropology. The Infrastructure of the barrel model is exemplified through the cost of Facebook. There are many websites out there that are able to link a large group of people for a small fee. In order to have a Facebook account the only thing that is required is that you provide information about yourself and an email address. It is a quick process and easy for anyone to figure out. There are certain applications on Facebook that cost money but they are not required and in turn are not as popular as the free ones. Facebook does cost money for the producers but it doesn’t for the people who use it, therefore it’s a free way to communicate instantly all over the world. The social structure is demonstrated through the instant communication and networking of Facebook. Communication has always been a major feature of Facebook exemplified through the wall-post, but recently Facebook has introduced Facebook Chat. Facebook Chat is an application, similar to AOL instant messaging, that allows users to communicate directly with other users that are online. It is a great way to talk to people that you may be intimidated by in a real conversation. It is also a great way to connect with old friends that may live in different areas of the United States or even different areas of the world. The most popular form of communication that Facebook offers is that of pictures. In order to gain a greater perspective of who a person really is, people may judge others on their Facebook pictures. Another integral part of the social structure would be the Facebook Friends Application. Meeting someone in a social situation and then adding them as a Facebook friend reiterates that you had a good time with that person and would like to be friends with that person. Superstructure of the barrel model is the greatest way to demonstrate why Facebook is popular in our society. Facebook allows us to show others who we are through our member account. Your morals, thoughts on religion, political organizations, personal information, thoughts on laws, relationships and ideas can be portrayed on your own Facebook page. Employers have even resulted to Facebook in order to gain a perspective on who their potential employee is outside of the working environment. You are even able to present your sports views through Facebook as new applications are invented every day including the famous CBS NCAA bracket application and a college football application. Through the barrel model of anthropology it is easy to see why Facebook has become so popular within our culture. From free communication to an easy way to present your point of view in public, Facebook seems to offer unlimited possibilities.
