Principles of Media Ecology (the study of media environments)
--the idea of media as an environment

Media: things that carry communication

Principles:
1. Media (meaning ways of communicating) mediate all human relationships
2. All media are biased.
3. A change in media can have profound effects on society.

**media mediates our conversations

--example of the changes caused by census taking in New Guinea

**causes us to see like a state!
**ppl named themselves as they had no need to have a proper name before---they only had to use relationship names
**caused villagers to build their villages fixed in locations, used for govt funding (schools, medical facilities etc...
**decided to also build "roads"
**now the POWER arrives!!!
**consolidation of villages is starting to happen. previously the villages were separated by a fear of witches. now the govt is persecuting/prosecuting the so-called witches so as to make the ppl comfortable living together.

Our media is us/ing us

it is using us
-it is using us to the extent that we're not aware of it
it is us
- we create all of the media around us
it is us using us.
-important to remember because the media is only as good as we make it.

The more savvy we are, we will be able to create a more meaningful media.
**all futurists agree....info about everything...this info will become more and more readable by machines
**we teach machines, the web learns

***INFO IS CONSISTENTLY...
(Prof. Wesch's Vid.)

We have the control. People should own what they create, and create what they own.

the general trend right now is toward ...
Ubiquitous networks
Ubiquitous computing
Ubiquitous information
At unlimited speed
About everything
Everywhere
From anywhere
On all kinds of devices

But even in a world of "ubiquitous information", this information is consistently
Controlled
Hidden
Manipulated

New Media requires us to rethink "basic literacy"
**VIDEO SKILLS ARE IMPORTANT HERE TOO!
**be able to critically view media and their intent!!!
**the video world can be/should be what we make of it when we talk back to the makers!!!
**IP (or the copyright holders) is the battleground for info in the future and art

New media, and the world, is what we make of it.

I think it is interesting to watch commercials and ads on the television. Not only to they aim their ads at their current viewer, they base their ads on what is currently going on in the world. It makes me question if the media is somewhat in control of our thoughts. For example, I know food ads are aimed at making you crave the food they serve, but today, while driving home from work an ad came on for sonic. I never eat fast food, but I immediately became overwhelmed at the thought of eating a big juicy hamburger. I feel like anymore, mass media is filling our heads with information whether its postiive or negative. What if the only ads for food that were allowed to be on the air were for healthy foods, would our country have the same obesity problem? Same idea with shopping sales. I don't necessarily think to go shopping at a store until they send a coupon for 20% off this or 40% off that. Once I'm out shopping, I want to continue shopping, which makes me spend more money. It seems mass media is a viscous cycle that creates a trend in our country. This link helps back up my thoughts about whether or not our media is too in control. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qv4_YMl9k0w

Media has the ability to excite, anger, or amuse society. It can disprove, uphold, or suggest ideas.
Both a benefit and a hindrance to a community, the media is a huge development that plays a crucial role in distributing information across the world.
However, the ability to control the minds of it's viewers is not something to take lightly.
An article published very recently goes over what government backed media would look and sound like:

I feel like media is a great thing for our culture as long as you allow yourself to find out for yourself about the stories presented.

Media is something that impacts peoples lives everyday. Media can be changed into the way they want people to view it, surround their thoughts among what people what to hear and the way people want to look. In Dove, they do a video that shows just how much media can make someone look so perfect from all the computer changes they make to a person yet in all reality the women looks more like an everyday lady before they change everything about her.

This youtube video points out simple things that people don’t think “control” their lives yet media does. It shows how people are dependent on the TV for news and believe anything they are told. What people see on TV is what they believe. It has comics that joke about the media but looking and thinking about them they are true and makes it sad how much our world today is about media.

Media has is positives and negatives. Media allows people to be in touch with society and be able to find out things in just minutes, it is quick and easy to look up research; people can connect with others around the world and many other positives. Although, some negatives are anything can be changed to fit the way they want people to hear what is being said or shown, it takes away the personal connection between people, not always accurate and shows people ways to act yet they may not be for the best.
This article is about the different theories that exist about the media and how they affect people today. It goes through how each one may cause a person to act. Videos on it about the way media shows and depicts people every day. Its a great article to look at all the different viewpoints of the theories and see how much media really has affected our world since the first TV was made and even more now that we have Youtube and the internet.
