Koobecaf By: Laura Preston I recently traveled to a land called Nacirema; one part of their culture I found very interesting was Koobecaf. To use Koobecaf you must move to a room and place yourself in front of one of the objects they call a retupmoc. A retupmoc is much like an object that displays pictures. What is interesting about these pictures is that you can look at other pictures in the same frame. Pictures in this frame allow you to access what they call the tenretni. This particular picture enables them to look at even more pictures or setisbew. From these setisbew you can access the social network Koobecaf. While sitting at this retupmoc, they look at these pictures on Koobecaf which allow them to connect with other people. Although there are several different ways to connect with different people Koobecaf is by far the most common. The people who are logged into this social network have their own Koobecaf. Koobecaf is a network that contains a pictures and information about them, this is called their eliforp page. Friends of the Koobecaf owner are allowed to view their eliforp page and epyt on their llaw. The llaw is a place where friends can leave a message or keep in touch with the Koobecaf owner. After they have established their main eliforp page, they can begin utilizing the benefits of this creative technology. Some of the benefits I found were the ability to add an unlimited number of friends, to maintain long distance friendships, and showcase their personality. First off, I believe having an unlimited number of friends is beneficial in that it allows you to have a very diverse group of friends. This also leads into the ability to maintain long distance friendships. While each friend may be hundreds of miles away physically, at their retupmoc they are never more than seconds away from a direct conversation. Lastly, all the features like the photos and personal statuses allows them to demonstrate exactly who they are or the person they desire to be. Although there are many benefits of Koobecaf, I found several downfalls. The most notable of these being the absence of non-verbal communication, idealization of who they are to match their friend’s expectations, and it is very time consuming. To begin with, it is rumored that non-verbal communication comprises a great percentage of human contact and most of that contact is lost in Koobecaf. You are then left with frills and non-essential information that can cover who they truly are. Next is the idea that individuals may want to portray a different personality to fulfill others expectations. Examples of this would include; pretending to be partiers, jocks, good kids, druggies, and all other types of people. Most importantly, Koobecaf is very time consuming and a distraction. Users of Koobecaf may spend valuable time adjusting their eliforp, or gniepyt on others llaws. All of these concepts for better or worse have impacted the Nacirema culture. By my observation, without an increased awareness, Koobecaf may irreversibly change the social structure, superstructure, and infrastructure of Nacirema culture as it is today.
