American’s culture today has been consumed by business. People have to work all day, be in two places at once, and communication has to be faster than the speed of light. Communication is a big part of American’s culture because people have to talk to each other on subjects like business, school, and social activities. Without efficient and effective modes of communication with one another our culture could not function because of the need that exists to plan and organize events and happenings who define who we are. With recent technological advancements, Facebook has taken over the way that we communicate with one another, ultimately altering the way people interact with their friends. Therefore, the affects that Facebook has had on society go deeper than the social structure we live in and penetrate people’s perception on the world around them.
First, Facebook is defined as “a social utility that connects you with the people around you.” The whole concept of someone, including myself, to have a Facebook Profile is to keep in contact with friends and see what is going on in their lives. The rest of Facebook are perks and a great way to show others who that person is and what they are like, ultimately, and hopefully, making more friends. When Facebook first started up the founder, Mr. Zuckerberg, made if only accessible for college students so they can keep in contact with friends at different colleges. In the past couple of years, Facebook has been opened up to everyone. This has cause high school students to make their own profile on Facebook, and it has also allowed for parents to get a Facebook profile. Now with parents having a profile I have observed that many students feel like they are being monitored by them and are afraid to show their true feelings, ideals, and their true self. If a person alters who they are, or at least alter the way that they show themselves, this affects their relationships with their current friends and even future friends. These potential friends are crucial in a persons social life because with friends comes power.
This power that many people seek is what I like to call “Friend Competition.” What I have experienced is people just want to be friends with another person just to say that they are friends with them. They have no contact with each other and do not care what the other person is doing. Power is what this person is seeking. When another person looks on their profile and sees that they are friends with 702 people that person intimidates the other because of their popularity, or power. Then the other person compares themselves to the person with 702 friends, hence the name “Friend Competition.”Another factor in which Facebook friend’s affect our social life is the way people interact with each other. It is rare anymore that people get letters in the mail or stop by their room or house to ask or talk to a person about something. American’s culture today is moving away from being sociable, interacting face-to-face with one another, and truly caring about others feelings. All of this is happening because people have access to faster modes of transporting their message, like texting or writing on Facebook. I do believe that friendships have suffered because of this of this impersonal communication, and Facebook friend’s promotes this. For example, two weeks ago, I was on Facebook and the girl across the hall from me started to chat with me through Facebook just to say hi and see how I was doing. Well instead of answering her back through Facebook I got up walked ten feet and started a conversation that way. Since people have access to more means of communication they tend to pick the faster and the laziest way. After using Facebook to communicate with friends for all this time it starts to affect the way we think.
After being impersonal for awhile, people’s concept of friendship have gone down. People will start devaluing the friendships that they have and will prevent future friendships. People will start loosing empathy toward each other because they have been separated from each others emotions, by a computer, for so long that they do not know how to deal with those emotions when it crosses their path. And if the empathy is gone then people start loosing that communication that they had until they become distant from each other. This lack of communication also affects future friendships for the same reason, if people do not care about the other person than that bond of friendship will not form. Ultimately, people who use Facebook will not view people in the same way that they have in the past.
There is a wide demographic population who use Facebook for the same reason, to communicate with each other in a social setting. What many people do not realize is that what they are ultimately doing is changing the way that they interact with each other on a social level, but also changing their thought process toward others. This idea of an impersonal friendship has penetrated our culture through the minds of the people and has affected us in a deep way that many still do not know that it has happened to us.
