Austin Allison Koobecaf Assignment 9/20/08 Cultural Anthropology Koobecaf From an Outside Observation As I look upon this society where obviously relationships, friends, and family are valued very highly I come across Koobecaf where people are linked together but don’t have to be together to interact with each other. I will explore this very technological advanced system and try to explain why this society relies greatly on this idea that many people can be together but be far apart at the same time. First, it seems as if you have to an I.D. or membership to access Koobecaf. Once granted in to Koobecaf each member has there own profile of themselves which they can explain themselves such as, where they are from, birthday, relationship status, and status updates which to my understanding must mean what that particular individual is doing right at this moment. Some of this information seems very private and personal to me but to some members they put everything about themselves in a way to express who they are. It seems very personal but also impersonal at the same time because there is a way that allows you to be someone’s friend upon their approval but also you can look at their profile and figure out some things about them before even knowing who they are. Some members have thousands of friends while others seem to have maybe a hundred, maybe that signifies that some people are more popular than others. Most of these people have pictures of themselves and others that display what their lives are like. Also there are what is called “applications” that people put on there own profiles that must signify something about themselves. One is called “Compare,” where members compare their own friends and it calculates to see which members are better at different topics such as “best smile” or “best body.” I think that Koobecaf has become very popular with this society because the members want to become more impersonal rather than personal. I mean that people want to learn more about others without necessarily getting to know them. The old saying is “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” well I think we should change it to say “Don’t judge a person based on their profile.” This society is highly based on their infrastructure or their technology. Without technology I believe that this culture wouldn’t know how to live their daily lives. After my observations about Koobecaf I believe that their infrastructure is highly developed and is probably at a high growing rate because it seemed that millions of Koobecaf members were accessing it daily, if not many times a day to update their own selves and to check others to see if anybody else had changed them self. As for their social structure I would say from my experiences with this is that they are very reliant on each other for support and emotion attachment. Also family is very important to many members of Koobecaf, most of pictures of what seems to be family and friends, meaning to me that they hold them close in their lives. Going with the social structure it seems that many people value relationships with someone else that is also a member of Koobecaf. Some “statuses” say something like in a relationship with, engaged to, or even married to. These people value ties with someone else in their society because they want they other millions of member to recognize their partnership. Also I believe that each profile on Koobecaf symbolizes individually because each people makes their profile how they want it and how they want others to perceive how their lives are. Finally, that leaves me with a look at the superstructure of this society and the impact that Koobecaf has had on them. Superstructure is the ideas, beliefs, and values that one society adopts and closely relates to. The members of Koobecaf believe that connections with each other are important to each other and they value each others friendship and relationships. The power of connections to each other drives them to put statuses public and also add new friends. Relationships and connections to this society is greater than anything else. I believe that Koobecaf is growing everyday at a high rate and as right now has no stop in sight. Without Koobecaf some of these members wouldn’t know what to do with their lives and also probably worry that there isn’t anything to do while in class or studying for tests.
