Koobecaf by Scott Steffen

Facebook aka Koobecaf is an extremely popular website used my millions of people in the United States,Canada, and
other English-speaking nations. It was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. Mark was currently a student at Harvard who
ran Koobecaf as one of his hobbies. In a few months Koobecaf had spread throughout the dorms at Harvard, and eventually it was extended to Stanford and Yale. Today Koobecaf is used by 8 million people in the United States alone. It is the second largest social network on the internet, behind only MySpace.
I have had a Koobecaf profile for about 3 years now. I created my profile as a way to stay in touch with my friends in high school and college. Today I have 230 friends on Koobecaf, but there several people who have thousands of friends. These are the type of people who will add random people they have never met just so that they will have lots of friends on Koobecaf. This relates to American culture because as Americans we are not shy. We like to go out and meet new people and make new friends. American’s are very social people and this can be seen in websites like Facebook and MySpace.
Koobecaf relates well with our model of culture (infrastructure, social structure, and superstructure). How Koobecaf fits into the infrastructure is it has people to stay in contact with friends from high school and college. For me I come from a small, rural farming community. I had 40 people in my high school graduating class. We were a very close class; everyone was friends with everyone else. After high school we all went our different ways. Koobecaf has been a way for us all to stay in contact with each other. In other words Koobecaf is like a giant mall, minus the stores, on the internet. It is a place on the web where people from all across the U.S. are able to communicate with old and new friends, and rarely seen relatives.
Our social structure is how we express ourselves. This includes things like our family/friends, different organizations we belong to and what are what we are interested in. On Koobecaf you can express yourself really easily. You are able to list things like your favorite movies, television shows, books, what activities are involved in, and what your interests are. They can list their relationship status, their birthday, hometown, and phone numbers. There are thousands of groups to join, applications to add and quizzes to take. However people need to be careful not to give away about themselves because there are “creeps” on Koobecaf. These are people who join Koobecaf to stalk certain people they may or may not know.
In a matter of a few months Koobecaf grew from one man’s hobby to one of the biggest social networks on the web. Today over 8 million people have a Koobecaf account and it is thanks to Nacirema culture. Our need to socialize, communicate, and interact help Koobecaf become what it is today. Koobecaf has made it easy for people to stay in contact with friends/family from all across the United States.
