Koobecaf by Natalie Umberger
The Nacirema is a group of individuals who rely greatly on others and their society. Nacirema interact with their society daily and depend on others for socialization. Koobecaf is a way of socialization in the Nacirema culture. Koobecaf is used as a social device, a spying device, and a networking device. Before Koobecaf the Nacirema met predominately at work, school, and extracurricular activities. There were a lot of face to face interactions. Social gatherings were planned through work or school. After Koobecaf became a popular tradition, the Nacirema’s face to face interactions decreased. Their social gatherings were planned over Koobecaf. Conversations were channeled around Koobecaf. The Nacirema no longer asked friends what was happening in their lives, they simply waited until Koobecaf updated them. The Nacirema value individuality although true individualism is hard to find. Through Koobecaf the Nacirema feel as though they have their own personality. Each Nacirema has their own personalized Koobecaf page which they can alter anyway they like. The Nacirema can personalize their page by adding applications such as, top Nacirema, movie quotes, car stickers, and much more. All of these applications dress up the page adding color and individuality to each page. Although Koobecaf offers each Nacirema the same applications they have the option of which applications to add to their page and how to organize the applications. Conversations not only included the material on Koobecaf but how it looked. The Nacirema has been known to be a very snoopy culture. Gossip is a ritual. So it’s no surprise that Koobecaf contributes to the snoop factor. The first page that shows up on Koobecaf is a page with notifications of other Nacirema and their activity on Koobecaf, such as relationship updates, picture uploads, and other pages they have posted on. Nacirema can look at other’s pages and see their photos, their personal information, and what they have been doing on Koobecaf. The other side to this is that the Nacirema can also take off of any updates from their personalized page that they don’t want others to see. So if a relationship ended and the two people in the relationship don’t want anyone to know they can use a button, considered magical to some, and no one has to know about the ended relationship. The one problem I saw with all this logic was that it’s basically a one way street. The Nacirema want to spy on others to see what they doing but they want to block others from spying on them. I think that shows how insecure the Nacirema are. They hide parts of their own lives to avoid judgment but they spy on others to weigh other Nacirema’s lives against their own. Koobecaf is a networking device that allows Nacirema to connect with others around the world. Koobecaf also allows groups to be created. These groups contain many Nacirema with a common interest. They can discuss a certain topic, post pictures, post comments, and invite others with the same common interest. There is also a section on one side of each personalized Koobecaf page where it lists other Nacirema that might be known by each individual. These other Nacirema all have something in common with the said Nacirema. Regardless this section is a suggestion for that Nacirema on possible friend matches, more networking. Koobecaf has become very popular over the past couple of years and is predicted to increase in popularity as time continues. And it’s no question why when it serves as a social, spying, and networking device.
