When Mark Zuckerberg first launched Facebook in 2004, there is no way he would of ever thought it would have become as huge of a phenomenon as it has become today. Back when it first appeared on the internet it was only available for Harvard University students, but later became available to other college students. In the past couple years Facebook has dramatically expanded, it is now available to almost anyone. Almost all high school and college aged students have is, as well as many middle school/junior high kids. It is so crazy how fast this phenomenon has occurred in our society today. Facebook is used for many different things, like keeping in touch with friends, sharing information about yourself, and making yourself look unique compared to everyone else. A good way for people to show off their individual uniqueness on Facebook is with the Bumper Sticker application. When someone adds the Bumper Sticker application, ,they can add as many stickers as they want and they can also receive them from their friends. There are hundreds of bumper stickers to choose from and several different categories to pick from. Adding certain stickers shows off your personality and uniqueness and shows how other people view you. The Bumper Sticker application can relate to the “Barrel-Model” in many different ways depending on which cultural system you are looking at. In the Superstructure, Bumper Sticker can affect someone’s ideas, values, and concepts a lot. If someone has an idea of a bumper sticker they would like to have, but can’t find it, they can upload a picture themselves then add it to their profile. It is more of a way for that person to express themselves because they can show off what they are interested in. Since there are so many bumper stickers you can choose from, some may have an impact on people’s values and beliefs. If someone finds a bumper sticker that they believe is inappropriate, they can report it as offensive, but it takes a lot of people to mark it offensive for it to be taken down. When a person finds a bumper sticker that agrees with their ideas and values they can add it and have it appear on their profiles, which in return shows others their values and concepts. So people get to know someone’s personality better by looking that their bumper stickers and seeing what they are interesting in and their values and concepts. If someone has certain political or social organizations they are involved with, then they can add stickers that fall into those categories for everyone to see. Like if someone wants a certain person to win the presidency they can add a bumper sticker that shows that person off and show others what they believe. I have several Barack Obama bumper stickers on my Facebook, so others can see that I support him and want him as the future president. This would fall under the Social structure of the “Barrel-Model.” Using the Bumper Sticker application on Facebook obviously is using technology, which falls under the Infrastructure cultural system. When Facebook first came out there weren’t any application people could add to their profile and now Bumper Sticker is just one of hundreds people can choose from. It just shows how much technology has advanced just within the last few years. Seeing Facebook now compared to how it was when I first started using it really shows me how advanced technology has come and how large/fast Facebook is growing. Facebook hasn’t been around that long, but has already came this far within a very short time, just imagine how much further it will go. No one knows what the future in technology is going to hold, but Facebook is just the start of it all.
