Koobecaf by Jeni Kucharo
A fairly new subculture by the name of Koobecaf has rapidly rocketed into the lives of the people living in Nacirema. While the majority of the people living in the Nacirema have recognized and accepted this new culture, many are still puzzled by the Koobecaf. To help everyone begin to understand this new phenomenon, I will begin to explain why the Koobecaf have become so intriguing, how the people communicate, and how this subculture has begun to affect the Nacirema. The people that belong to the culture of the Koobecaf are very open-minded and free willing. They don’t hide any of their information from the other members of the community. Most members put all of the information that, what normally would be private, out for all of the community to see. On the other hand, not all the members have been so careless. There are a number of members who withhold the information that could possibly put them in a predicament. The Nacirema find this interesting because while some see sharing personal information as not that big of a deal, the Nacirema has seen multiple instances where sharing that information has ended in disastrous things, such as rape and sometimes murder. With all the new ways to communicate though, bad things are bound to happen with any culture. The Koobecaf communicate through walls and boards where friends, family members, or just acquaintances can leave messages for the person to see. People even use it as a means to find a significant other for themselves. While this isn’t necessarily a bad way to communicate, it eliminates the need for personal contact. This form of communication can make people say things they may not be brave enough to say normally because there is no face to face personal contact. Their means of communication is efficient, but very impersonal in an already impersonal world. The Nacirema has been known to welcome in all new types of cultures, including the Koobecaf, but the Koobecaf has begun to affect how the Nacirema are living their everyday lives. Technology is an important resource to all the people living in the Nacirema and Koobecaf. Upon observing the people from both cultures, they are similar in many ways. Both cultures are reliant entirely on technology and electronics. They tend to freak out if they don’t have their internet and their cell phones. However, the culture of the Koobecaf has mostly eliminated the need for even cell phones. The Koobecaf relies entirely on the internet resource as their means of communication, politics, economics, education and even community. The entire Koobecaf community exists on the internet. They use it entirely for communication between one other and some even use the internet to speak about politics and catch up on the local political debates. The economy is another way they use the internet. To go shopping one used to have to get in a car, or walk, to the closest store to get what they needed. Not anymore, the Koobecaf now has a marketplace of their own on the internet for all the members to shop and they never have to leave their house. Finally, education has even made its way to the internet, while the Koobecaf doesn’t seem to use online classes, they have educational resources where people with similar educational interests can get together and help one another. The people of the Nacirema are rapidly falling into the Koobecaf culture without even realizing they are changing. New cultures usually rise slowly, but the Koobecaf has rapidly come to the attention of the Nacirema. While the Koobecaf doesn’t have a bad culture, they are very impersonal and don’t really get to know the real person behind the message. Both the Nacirema and Koobecaf were very interesting to study in all aspects and because they affect one another.
