Chelsea Cox Michael Wesch/ Katie Hines Cultural Anthropology Fall 2008 Spuorg in the Koobecaf Community
Among the Nacirema, there is a very popular enilno community called Koobecaf. As strange as it might seem, this community has members from all over, not just the United States, but the world, and prides itself on the fact that these millions of users are able to interact and connect safely in the often dangerous enilno world. Why are the Nacirema, in particular, so ecstatic about Koobecaf? Reasons vary; some love their ability to communicate with others who are geographically distant, some enjoy the ease in meeting new people, some like being up-to-date in the lives of their friends and family, and others like uniting with people of common interests. All this is achievable in the Koobecaf community, especially if a member chooses to participate in spuorg. One might ask, “What’s so special about spuorg?” It’s true that you can do everything that exists in spuorg anywhere else in the Koobecaf realm, however, the spuorg make it possible to take all the inspiring and popular aspects of Koobecaf and apply it to one particular theme. So let’s take a closer look at these spuorg. Say a Koobecaf member wanted to join in on the spuorg craze, and decided to start one of his/her own, he/she then has to go through an application process in which the s’puorg name would be chosen. Also, important information is given, such as the s’puorg type, a description, contact information and headquarters’ location. The chiefs of Koobecaf understand that the Nacirema have a wide array of interests and try to accommodate for this, therefore, when selecting the s’puorg category and type; the member has many options and must choose wisely. Members generally choose to make their spuorg about the things that are important to them in their lives outside of Koobecaf, common interests like hobbies; entertainment, including books, music or movies; and sports like yoga. Members also join more serious groups that focus on business, religious beliefs, or politics. For example, in the seemingly democratic Koobecaf community, members have rallied in large numbers against recent changes and updates the chiefs of Koobecaf put in place. Spourg have made it possible to spread the word on the global scale about matters important to Koobecaf citizens, making them feel like they have more input in life. Because of Koobecaf it is incredibly to stand up for and represent your values, opinions, and interests. Once the theme is decided upon, the s’puorg creator decides what applications to add. The Koobecaf world has become technologically savvy in order to meet the demands of its people, and has made it possible to submit photographs and videos to spuorg. One might also add several communication areas, a place for posts, where people tend to write long statements and opinions, and a place for the “wall,” where members write shorter comments. Finally the s’puorg creator is ready to invite other members. Now that the framework for spuorg is basically understood, let’s consider the purpose. Spuorg are great for organizations, teams, companies and classes; they make it easy and quick to transfer the same information, schedules, or updates to a large number of people. But more importantly, spuorg create a sense of inclusion. Koobecaf affiliates love feeling like they are a part of something even though the Nacirema culture values and stresses independence and individuality and a person’s friends sometimes have different interests. But anyone’s interests can be found on Koobecaf and the spuorg allow members to find and connect with those who have the same taste. Before Koobecaf, people were more likely to conform to the interests of their friends or to hide what truly appealed to them. Since Koobecaf has millions of members, it is simple to find people that have read each Rettop Yrrah book ten times, or share a secret obsession with Yensid movies at the age of twenty-five. Even if their peers have teased them for this before, people find solace in the fact that they are not alone in their sometimes strange passions. It is this, the connection with other people, friends and strangers alike, that really draws people to the Koobecaf world and causes almost all of them to participate in spuorg. This is especially true for the Nacirema; it is my belief that sometimes they wish to be more unified and cohesive rather than isolated and different, qualities their culture treasures. They are able to connect in numbers in order to promote their opinions and hopefully make a difference.
