Facebook has become an everyday part of American culture. What started only allowing Harvard students entry, soon erupted into a worldwide phenom. Not until September 26, 2006 was facebook opened up to the public, except for people under the age of thirteen. Since that time facebook has changed our culture dramatically in many different ways. Since facebook’s eruption nearly every high school and college student’s lives revolve around it. It has become a new way of communicating. Instead of calling we often hear, “Just facebook message me!” People no longer spend time worrying about how they will approach someone for the first time. They simply friend request them and start talking to them from there. Whether or not that becomes an actual friendship or simply stays online that tends to be another problem. Facebook has become a way to connect with people with similar interests. Joining groups has become a new way of finding people who share similar interests where you could possibly meet. Before I came to campus I joined a group, Accepted: Kansas State Class of 2012, where I had many people who were coming here add me as well. None of those became true friendships so far, but I did end up having a class with someone from the group. Making connections through the web has given people many more options because sometimes friendships can be formed with people who believe in the same things or participate in the same activities. Advertisements have also become a large part of facebook, generating large revenue for the company. Facebook generated an estimated $150 million in 2007 alone. The advertisements have also become generated to the person whose site it is. Since joining the Kansas State network many of the advertisements have been for places around town, I saw a Kite’s banner on the side the other day. With Facebook there are applications that a user can add to their profiles. These range from sports fan pages to bumper stickers. One of the most popular applications happens to be these bumper stickers, they can be added to a profile by the user or they can be sent to friends. Many times people send them to friends as some sort of inside joke, or they remind them of a time they spent together. Pictures make up a big part of the facebook world. Many times if people take pictures one night, they will be on within twenty-four hours. “Tagging” people in pictures has become a big deal, so everyone will know they were there. With the pictures on facebook everyone is able to know what others were doing over the weekend. No longer do we need to ask people what they did, because many times it will already be known via facebook. Now that facebook has added a chat feature you are able to talk to your friends instantly, which brings more people to facebook for longer periods of time. It has made many users of both AIM and MSN stop using that and only use facebook. Now plans are being made while on facebook instead of over the phone. Overall facebook has reduced the use of face to face communication. It has changed American culture and will most likely continue the change it with the addition of new applications.
