Gretchen Gosch ANTH 204 September 18, 2008 Koobecaf Assignment Since coming to Nacirema there are many concepts that I still cannot seem to understand. I have grown accustomed to the way that Naciremans interact socially with each other for the most part, but there are still some things that are boggling my mind. The technology here in Nacirema is growing bigger and bigger every single minute that I live here and I am now struggling to keep up with the current latest news and information. Just recently I have purchased a small flat box that Naciremans refer to as a computer, and since owning it I have discovered an entire new culture and way of life. Naciremans are constantly on the go. If they are not busy chatting away on their cell phones, they are busy staring at a computer screen. The culture of the Naciremans is largely based on staying in touch with one another. This is why Naciremans have become almost obsessed with the concept of “Koobecaf”. Koobecaf is a website that Naciremans are constantly logging onto and constantly discussing. Koobecaf is a website that was originally designed for college students only, but since it originated 4 years ago, it has grown dramatically and now anyone can get onto the website and make their own “eliforp” page. On each person’s eliforp page there is a concept of individuality. There are many different things on each eliforp page such as: status update, relationship status, pictures, and the infamous “llaw”. People with a Koobecaf account will not only become obsessed with their own llaw, but they will become obsessed with the concept of “gniklats” other people’s sllaw’s. In order to look at other people’s sllaw’s, first you must become friends with them. Once you send a friend request to the person’s llaw you wish to look at, that person can either accept your friendship request, or they can deny it meaning you will not be able to look at their llaw. You can also write on other peoples’ llaws and then they can write back to you. This way, you can always be in touch with old friends, boyfriends or girlfriends and even family members. Naciremans are usually just friends with people that they have met before or are acquaintances with, but lately people are becoming friends with people they have never met before, and this is how some violent acts are occurring. People begin to klats others and this is why parents are monitoring their childrens Koobecaf accounts more and more. It is still hard for me to grasp the concept of Koobecaf and why Naciremans are so involved with other people’s lives. Koobecaf allows you to know exactly what other people are doing, when they are doing things and with whom they are doing them with. In Mars we are not so dependent upon other people and since coming here I have learned that Naciremans probably could not go a day without having the urge to log onto Koobecaf and check out what all of their friends’ statuses are. All in all after living here in Nacirema, it just made me realize how much I miss Mars and cannot wait to go home and escape the technology of Nacirema and their way of life. In Mars, things are simpler and that is they way I like to live my life.
