When Facebook first appeared on the World Wide Web in 2004 it was not even close to the phenomenon that it has become four years later. Almost every American has heard of Facebook, whether they have one or not. Facebook accounts are logged into daily or even numerous times a day. Facebook has become so popular in our American culture because it has created easier ways of communication between people. It is also an easy way to keep in touch with people who you no longer see very often. In today’s day and age technology has become the center of everyday lifestyles. Personal conversations with one another is not emphasized like it was fifty years ago. Even talking on the phone can be a rarity these days. It is so much easier to just text, email or write on a Facebook wall. Facebook fits into the barrel model like this.
First is the Superstructure, which includes ideas, values and concepts. Facebook allows people to share whatever they would like on their Facebook profile page. Your name, birthday, who you are dating, what kind of relationship you are looking for are just a few examples. Also on a profile page you can publicize info about yourself ranging from interests, favorite books to your favorite quotes. Pictures with friends will often be referred to as “Facebook photos”, with sayings such as “Facebook it!” All these features allow individuals to create an identity for themselves, whether that is who they really are or not.
Social Structure involves social and political organizations as well as kinships. Through Facebook people can have hundreds of friends. Often time’s individuals will just add acquaintances and call them “Facebook friends.” Also people will just add anybody as a friend, so it appears that they have a lot of friends. This is sometimes a way for people reveal a popularity status. Facebook lets you make social events. For example a graduation party can be an event. This way you can invite people to it without actually sending out a personalized invite.
Finally Infrastructure, this includes technology, demographics and economic systems. Technologically Facebook is so popular because of the accessibility. Numerous people have access to a computer, or now days you can use smart phone to connect to the internet. The smart phone allows individuals to check Facebook on the go. Demographically, we have talked about the countless number of friends you can have on Facebook. Economically, the marketplace is a great example of this. It is a way to sell possessions you no longer need or to purchase items. Many students sell football tickets on the marketplace along with lofts and old books.
Facebook is ever growing, expanding and changing. Just recently the “new Facebook” has been put into effect. Which many people dispute and make groups proclaiming their dislike for the latest Facebook. But just like the American culture, change is bound to happen and everything improves.
Personal contact with others is threatened with Facebook. People no longer just pick up the phone to call friends or walk over to a friend’s house to see them, or drive to a different town to visit. Facebook is used instead. You can just look on a friend’s Facebook and see pictures, posts and know what has been going on in their life. It seems that Facebook has become a necessity in everyday life for many Americans. And due to its increasing popularity it may always be a necessity for numerous Americans across the nation.
