Koobecaf Assignment-Haley Lloyd
Within the intricate workings of the web, a new culture has evolved: Koobecaf. In this culture we use the infrastructural technology (the Web), whether accessed by our laptops or our blackjacks, to move from the wonderful culture of Nacirema to a world all by itself. Inside Koobecaf, we find that our human contact and actual verbal communication diminish, and in return this culture uses the keyboard to write information about who they are, play songs that express their thoughts, type status’ that reflect their moods, bumper stickers (applications) to depict their interests, and photographs to capture moments, and allow others to visualize the person on the other side of the screen. The new way of communication within Koobecaf, brings us, as learning anthropologists, to look at the ways in which this new civilization bounces around the Model of Culture. Communication works within each of these three categories; Superstructure, Social Structure, and Infrastructure. Starting with the basis of the model, Infrastructure the communication begins with the technology. The way our fingers travel to the right key to hit the word we wish to put onto our profile displays the complex technology behind this Koobecaf culture. Delving deeper yet into the barrel, we see how the Social Structure accumulates most of the Koobecaf communication; person to person. The varieties of ways in which these members communicate are incredible. One way in which they communicate is through actual instant “typing” or “chatting.” Upon looking at the Koobecaf tahc, one can see how the language changes from actual conversation. “How r u 2day?” or “Btw, r u goin 2 go 2 j’s house 2nite or sty hme?” This new type of language is used within the chatting sessions available within this culture. Communications such as the llaw-ot-llaw tsop, allow members to say things that they would normally have to say uncomfortably in the Nacirema culture. When a member of Koobecaf, one must create for themselves a profile, describing the person he/she is or wishes to be. This brings us to the Superstructure part of communication. Even in Koobecaf, one still has values, morals, and beliefs that they must remain true to. Koobecaf allows you to display these meaningful attributes on your profile. By doing so, you communicate with other members and relate to one another on a deeper level. With so many ways to communicate the tribe also has its setbacks. Like in any culture there are dangers and warning signs to look out for. In Nacirema we are taught not to take candy from strangers or not to trust everything we hear. In Koobecaf, the warning signs are less noticeable, and often times an individual will forget that they are breaking the rules. Koobecaf’s addicting ways allow a person to find their subsistence from the gossip of the day; this is known as the deef-inim. These people fuel off the gossip they learn and spread the word like disease. Their information and news is updated nearly every five minutes. With such a gossip entailed culture, the “Koobecaf srepeerc” are the strangers with the candy we look out for. With the Koobecaf Superstructure, individuals have no set beliefs, and no one way is the ONLY right way. The Superstructure contains thousands of varied beliefs and morals and no one is to judge. Within its Social Structure, we see the main form of communication between individuals and the connecting of political groups. Lastly within the Infrastructure, we find the technology and complicated minds behind Koobecaf, and the subsistence of gossip and lust behind the screen. Koobecaf continues to expand and reach all parts of the world. Will Koobecaf one day take over our Nacirema world, and create the Nacirema inside Koobecaf?
