Koobecaf Assignment by Kayleigh Koster
When looking at the culture of Nacirema you might see that it includes three important perspectives that make up who the individuals are. Infrastructure includes the technology of the Nacirema, social structure includes the social and political organizations along with family structure, and the superstructure includes the ideas, values and beliefs of the people. People from Nacirema simply sit and stare at a large screen which provides many words and pictures. While looking at the screen, they poke at little pieces of plastic shapes. This all somehow gives them some sort of insight into the world. This screen allows people to step out of their little box and communicate with potentially anyone they want from all over the world. How do they manage to do all this? It is all done through one word, Koobecaf.
Koobecaf has only been around for about 4 years, but throughout those years, it almost seems to be taking over people’s lives in Nacirema. This thing called technology has become so advanced that the creators are changing the webpage daily affecting the infrastructure of the culture. Everyone has a koobecaf and it has become so popular because it seems to be the easiest and fastest way to communicate, though very less personable. After meeting someone once, you might become koobecaf friends with them and stay close with them or still communicate; whereas if you meet someone and don’t keep that connection, you may never talk again. The people post on something called a “llaw”. Everyone owns an invisible llaw where the individual can poke at the plastic pieces and leave notes on others llaw. People create a eliforp that provides viewers lots of information such as pihsnoitaler sutats, atadpu sutats, serutcip, and stseretni that are posted and open for anyone in the world to see. Koobecaf can virtually tell you anything about anyone or what they are doing at a certain time which can form stereotypes or a reputation about a person. When a person puts something on koobecaf they are putting themselves out there for the world to see. Koobecaf fits into the social structure because it allows a person to be an individual and post whatever they please. Serutcip of people doing things can tell you so much about who they are, what social status they fall under, and possibly their opinions on different things. It is the only visualization that one has of their peers; the rest is simply through poking at the plastic shapes. It also provides a market system, allowing people to buy and sell things over Koobecaf. The superstructure aspect is met through people expressing their values and beliefs through spuorg that are created. These spuorg can be about anything and other people in the koobecaf culture can join them, allowing people to share ideas, have common interests, and connect with others.
The ethnographer’s toolkit can be woven into to the koobecaf world in many ways. People can express themselves through love, empathy and thoughtfulness on koobecaf. They can be expressed through quotes or posting on people’s llaw. They can express these feelings to someone they might have lost touch with throughout the years. Their pihsnoitaler sutats is a form of love that can be expressed. All of these examples illustrate how koobecaf is a taking over the Nacirema world and how it is becoming one of the most popular forms of communication.
