Addiction has long been a problem of the Nacirema, often affecting those of high social stature all the way down to those who don’t even own a residence. The Nacirema have set aside mass quantities of funds in order to provide measures for the Nacirema youth that will prevent them from falling victim to demons of such addictions. Many of these demons are thought to be found in certain substances such as plants, liquids, and even special substances used for maintenance of the Nacirema homesteads. However a new trendy addiction has been sweeping across the lands and affecting a vast majority of the Nacirema by effectively targeting the culture’s youth. This addiction being Koobecaf.

Many of the young adults that become “hooked” go through similar experiences. It all starts innocently enough with a little emailing, or perhaps even MSN Messenger. Sooner or later however, many youths succumb to peer pressure and the Nacirema ritual known as popularity which leads to the “hard stuff”, Koobecaf. While upon observation many Koobecafers tend to be recreational “users” only logging on for the social aspect. However, with continual fixes between classes and late at night, many Nacirema youth find themselves “using” everyday sometimes multiple times a day.

While the side effects of extensive Koobecaf use is still widely unknown due to the fact that Koobecaf is fairly new, many of the Nacirema are beginning to question how this new addiction will affect their way of life. It has already been documented that the language of the Nacirema is beginning to change into a form of short hand that many of the society’s elders often disapprove of. Also many “users” admit that their extensive addictions often inhibit if not completely destroy their abilities to complete mandatory learning rituals, or take part in physical interaction outside using Koobecaf. Even though it is not yet proven, it has been witnessed also that continued use can lead to health problems such as weight gain, declining eye sight, hand and wrist damage, and perhaps even in time some brain trauma in the Nacirema. Bigger problems have also become a concern for some of the Nacirema, such as the idea that the technology being put into increasing the uses of Koobecaf is a waste when it could be used to help create cures for other ailments of the Nacirema. Technology is one of the highly regarded treasures of the Nacirema and is often only dispensed at a price. However, Koobecaf is free for many of its users, which can be seen in some ways as being detrimental to the economy of the Nacirema as the Koobecaf users’ addiction grow more intense leading to their lack of economic contribution. It could be of concern that Koobecaf becomes so widely and often used amongst the Nacirema that their sense of economy and democracy become completely altered. All interactions, voting, financial exchanges, communications, and informational sources of the Nacirema could someday only be available through the use of Koobecaf forcing more of the population to undergo its devastatingly powerful addictiveness.
