Koobecaf Assignment

Since it was first developed close to four years ago, Facebook (or Koobecaf) has greatly transformed the Internet and our nation’s use of the Internet. It has become of great importance to Nacirema culture, especially to the social aspects of it. It has totally changed the way many Nacirema communicate. It connects millions of Nacirema youth all over the country and with others throughout the world, allowing them to talk to each other and find out information about one another through each one’s profile. I know that with others, and myself, that not a day goes by without the thought of checking Koobecaf just to make sure that I don’t miss anything that is going on with friends or new groups of interest being added. Koobecaf allows users to belong to many different networks, connecting them to many different people. I belong to my high school’s network in order to stay in touch with my friends that go to different schools and I also belong to K-State’s network so that I can meet other new students and to add people that I have newly met as my friends. It has made getting into contact with distant and old friends much easier that it was in the past. Koobecaf is not only popular with youth, but also with adults maybe wanting to reach out to high school or college friends that they have not communicated with in a long time. Koobecaf relates to the barrel model of culture in many ways. Starting with environment, Nacirema people have become more dependent of the computer and the Internet. They are constantly using computers for business and personal use, always logging into Koobecaf, getting information on the latest news or blogging. For the infrastructure part of the model, Koobecaf influences our economics in that many Nacirema are using Koobecaf to sell items with Marketplace or advertising on the side columns of a Koobecaf page. Koobecaf really demonstrates the social structure aspects of the model, being that Koobecaf is a social-networking tool. Users can join thousands of Koobecaf groups that support a variety of their interests, what causes they believe in or which of their friends “need phone numbers” because their cell phone is broken. It also has changed social life so much so that many users are finding themselves taking pictures saying “This will be my new profile picture!” or jumping in pictures to show others that they were at the coolest party in school. Koobecaf has made photography more popular because many pictures taken by youth are now uploaded straight to Koobecaf to show everything they do, like the friends they hang out with, the activities they participate in or the vacations they have taken. Most importantly is the superstructure of Koobecaf where most of the activities on the site would fall in would include what users say back and forth between their wall posts, the newly popular Koobecaf chat and mainly the identity users create of themselves in their profiles. You can make your profile say anything you want it to, true or false, allowing others to believe who the real you is. Some will put in their profiles everything about themselves and their families or other users will use the advantage of available privacy settings and limit others to only see their name, their sex and maybe the school they attend. Koobecaf really expresses our culture’s dependency on social life. It really shows our needs to express ourselves and let others know who we are and what we do. It can be seen in both positive and negative ways and I can easily understand both points of view. It increases our dependency of the internet and is evolving our world into a technology-filled lifestyle. I think that Koobecaf is just the beginning of what is yet to come in the start to a “virtual-based” world where people don’t have to leave the comforts of their own home to further their education, make friends or even maintain relationships.
