Koobecaf/Facebook by Amber BarrattiThis is a featured page

Amber Barratti Professor Wesch Koobecaf Assignment Date Due-9/20/08 Koobecaf/Facebook What do the people mean when they say, “I’ll post it on your Facebook?” Is this some kind of speech in the culture of the Nacirema? These people talk about, “seliforp,” and, “spuorg.” Why are these things significant; and how do they relate to the Nacirema? By observation, I have found that Koobecaf, or Facebook, is used by the Nacirema as a way of communicating with friends, family, and co-workers. Individuals have, “Profiles,” where other people can read about their lives and interests, as well as relationship status. Groups are also formed by individuals, so they can meet other people, who share the same interests. Facebook fits into the barrel model of culture in a vast number of ways. Facebook uses the environment to run the technology, necessary to keep Facebook going. The computers and hard drives burn a lot of electricity and energy to keep Facebook up and running. The market place on Facebook shows anthropologist how Koobecaf affects the infrastructure of the Nacirema. Individuals or businesses are able to put items for sale on Facebook, where other people can look at and then purchase these items. The same can be said for the advertisements available for viewers on Facebook. Even if the Nacirema do not want to buy or sell an item, advertisements still flash on the users profile begging users, to at least look. Koobecaf influences the social structure, by affecting the many different levels of communication. Users can post their political party affiliation directly onto their profile. The Nacirema can also post their job information on their profiles as well. Technology is important to the Nacirema, because without it they wouldn’t have Koobecaf. If the Nacirema lost the use of all the computers, the Koobecaf community would be gone and users would lose contact with one another. An individual, is greatly influenced by the superstructure on Facebook, and in turn greatly influences the superstructure. The users profile, allows people to show their individuality, and viewpoints on an amazing amount of topics. The user can state their views on religion or simply let everyone know what music they like. On the flipside, people can look at their, “friends’,” page and read about someone else’s views, on certain aspects of life. This seems to have an influencing result on users, because it gives them a chance to discuss, and state their own opinions, or learn about something they maybe didn’t know. Koobecaf is teaching people because it is so inviting, and easy to use. There are some negative aspects for the Nacirema when they are using Koobecaf. Some say that it is less personal way for people to communicate with one another. Instead of calling your friend or sister to say, “Happy birthday,” you may just post it on Facebook. Other individuals argue that Koobecaf is an invasion of privacy. Facebook shows your relationship status online, and lets other uses know when you are online. Some users don’t even post their relationship status online. By observation I can understand these arguments and agree that Facebook is less personalized. However, Koobecaf is an important tool to the Nacirema, because it allows users to connect with other individuals, on a completely different platform then normal. Users can see pictures and status on profiles, that let them know how their, “friends,” are doing. Facebook makes the Nacieremas’ world a happier, more individualized place to socialize.
