Kinship / Social Organization (Lauren)
The people of Bagheera use a kinship terminology system known as the Iroquois system. This means that a father and his brother are referred to as the same single term, as is the mother and her sister. The father’s sister and mother’s brother on the other hand are given a separate term. Cross cousins (children of the mother’s brother or father’s sister) are distinguished by terms that set them apart from all other in. These cousins are often preferred as spouses to keep alliances between related lineages. In using this system the family is looked upon as a strong unity tool among the whole tribe. This being contrary to nuclear families that only support for the immediate members. This also brings child-rearing practices from all of the members, not only the child’s biological mother and father. The descent system the Bagheera use is patrilineal. This descent is traced exclusively through the male line to
establish group membership. When a boy of the Bagheera turns 15 he is considered old enough to hunt along his fathers. After the hunt there is a big celebration and feast for his first kill. The Bagheera also have a group of elders that have meetings with the village to discuss how things are going or troubles that might be happening. Since the Bagheera are an egalitarian society, these elders are by no means above the villagers.
The Bagheera are not stratified, but an egalitarian society, meaning that everyone has about equal rank, access to, and power over basic resources.
These aspects correlate a great deal to the Bagheera’s cultural values. Having an Iroquois kinship system allows everyone to come together and be apart of a child’s life. The feasts and rituals the tribe has are performed by all of the members. There is no separation of power among these people which works great to deal with problems.
