Facebook Assignment by Alison Thornberg
Politics of Facebook Facebook connects people all over the world by the social networking tools inside the site. The site offers messaging, wall-posts and now even chat. Millions log on everyday to view their friends, families and even strangers profiles. But what else are they seeing? Who pays for this incredible networking tool? Could this be the globalization product that not only corporations use for advertising, but government for encoding? The layout of your homepage is almost universal; the news feed is center, your status is above everything along with your display picture. But when browsing the right side below your notifications and even lower than your application requests what do you see? The sponsor. This is who benefits when you log on to facebook; this is what you were meant to see. It’s no accident that every time you look at the sponsor its something from your area, this ad was designed to attract you. Facebook allows categorizing as way to ensure the best audience (or potential consumers) viewed that particular advertisement; it appears now to only be regional. However, how do we know that the categories do not surpass that limit, they could use the profile information you uploaded to target you; facebook knows exactly what your interests are, your ethnic group, gender, age, where you live, socio-economic status, what school you attend(ed), everything needed to locate the perfect consumer. This is what the world enables and this is what we allow. We have created the means to have person-specific advertising and we have the social desire to view the ads. It’s a great tool and astounding insight for anyone who wants to convince us to do or try anything. With this technology of course there’s going to be more involved than just industry, there’s government. Now the sponsors are “groups” supporting Obama, McCain and even more region specific, Rusty. Each one trying to persuade you to vote them into office, now even future Government officials are using at least region-specific advertising. Have the candidates taken “sponsorship” a step further? They know what you would want in a future president or senator, its evident what your values are based on the information you provided in your profile. Obama’s support group has already utilized this. One ad offered a free Obama t-shirt in exchange for your support. If we break this down we realize that this technique would most likely only work in the cyber-world of facebook. The average user of facebook is around or under the age of a college student, and this age group is categorized for their materialism. Obama’s support group made the connection, use the generation’s materialism for a vote. It’s a pretty decent trade off in their eyes. What does this infer about our culture? Facebook has enabled our industry and government to take influencing a step further. Facebook is the American culture at its roots. Business takes priority, Government is persuasion. We provide and take in so much information we hardly realize what the real meaning is behind the social network. Facebook is the revolution of our culture; social networking is the equivalent to intelligent advertising and campaigning. Just be careful, the messages are not always so clear.
