Amy Lietzow's Koobecaf Assignment
“Okay, I will just message you on Koobecaf!” It is a typical saying in everyday conversation for this generation of the Nacirema. But how did Koobecaf become a staple in the average Nacireman college or high school student’s life? It seems as though it is the way times are changing within the technology of the world today. Computers, iPods, and global positioning satellites are now smaller than ever and it seems like everyone in the Nacirema has them. If one were to take a look at communication they would see that cell phones are becoming smaller and more sophisticated as well. For Nacireman teenagers, Koobecaf is the ultimate interaction aid. You can be friends with practically anyone who you’ve ever been acquainted with. Koobecaf will tell you what they are up to, who they are friends with, where they work, or even their activities. The popularity was most likely gained because people come and go so often and Koobecaf allows then to keep in contact with basically any Nacireman teenager. It truly is the ultimate tool for keeping in touch. But what is it about the Nacirema that enabled Koobecaf to become so popular? The interaction between Koobecaf and the Nacireman culture can be seen through various structures. First, within the infrastructure or foundation of each, there is a connection with economy. While there is a market economy within the Nacirema, Koobecaf holds the same type of economic exchange. For example, the Marketplace application of Koobecaf is also a type of economy. It is a way for students to buy or sell items to other students within their network. The Marketplace is not controlled by an authority figure and is a free market just like the Nacirema’s market economy. Koobecaf and the United State’s culture also show similarities within the social structure. Koobecaf is actually changing the Nacirema culture’s communication. It becomes easier to message on Koobecaf rather than using snail mail or e-mail. It is also creating a less personal form of contact. An example of this is birthday wishes. Before the cyber world, Nacireman’s would call a friend to wish them a happy birthday, but ever since Koobecaf, people just write it on their wall. The concept seems like it would be easier to say “happy birthday” to many friends; however are you true friends when the only reason you remember their birthday is because Koobecaf told you? Once again there is a connection between Koobecaf and the Nacirema culture within the superstructure. Individuality is a very important belief of the Nacireman culture. The profiles, info, and photo sections of Koobecaf also support individualism. One specific example would be the availability of an info section. Each user can post information about themselves such as their relationship status, favorite movies, favorite books, and even favorite quotes. By including the info division of Koobecaf, it makes yet another connection with the Nacirema and their culture. Overall, by noting the Nacirema and comparing it to Koobecaf, it can be seen that they share many characteristics within the infra, social, and superstructures. So, what aspect of Koobecaf is becoming so popular with the Nacirema? Based on the assessment of each culture, it seems as though the similarities are causing the boom in teenage fame. Since there are so many common aspects between the two, Koobecaf seems to fit snuggly within the culture of the Nacirema. Since the Nacireman technology is so far advanced especially in teenagers, Koobecaf is one way for them to stay up to date. This is what seems to be the overall cause of why Koobecaf has become so popular and continues to gain popularity within the Nacirema.
